Ujjain: Ban on ‘garba’ in public parks sparks controversy

Ujjain: A team of Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) and BJP leader Vivek Joshi stopped ‘garba’ preparations to be held during ‘navratri’ in a public park at Indira Nagar.

Following a decision of the Indore High Court, UMC commissioner, Dr Vijay Kumar J, has circulated orders banning cultural events in public parks. As per the court’s decision, use of makeshift tents, conducting exhibitions and organizing public events in parks will now be banned.

Almost all colonies conduct ‘garba’ in their respective parks every year, where hundreds of local residents participate. The commissioner’s decision has sparked a controversy among organizers. A complaint was also reportedly submitted to the Chimanganj Mandi police station, seeking legal action against the organizers.

To protest against this, former MLA Rajendra Bharti, former Congress corporator Deelip Parmar and organiser Dhaniram Raikwar, met SP Sachin Atulkar. They accused Vivek Joshi of politicising religious matters and said if the high court had indeed issued the orders, then why was it that only their park at Indira Nagar targeted, while BJP leaders themselves organized ‘garba’ events in various places including the swimming park. They insisted that ban should be implemented uniformly at all parks in the city.
