Delegation multiplies productivity.
The first requisite of a leader is to shift from the attitude of alt39 I will do italt39 to alt39 I will get it donealt39. As a parent we do understand that there is no joy in us doing the homework of our children. That wonalt39t develop the children. The same holds good in people development.
People are created through delegation. Leadership is like being a soccer coach. Sit in your seat, give the team the strategies and techniques, get them to run around in playing the game and you win the game, still sitting in your seat.
The foundation of successful delegation lies in clearly defining the task to be performed. Clarity of definition includes the objective of the task, the resources available for the task, the milestones and deadlines for the task, suggested procedures, skills required and the accountability factors. Discussing objectives and the final outcome motivates people to be more involved in the task; if only the processes are discussed, they feel treated like school kids. In case they lack the core competencies that are required to complete the task, then training them on the competencies required will be more efficient and time- saving than to nag them on the daily basics with processes and procedures.
Successful delegation is in finding the right balance between autonomy and responsibility. It is very important to give people the autonomy to carry out the delegated task in their own way. People feel too discouraged when managers insist on getting everything done only their way. Define the results expected and leave the ways to individual creative expressions. Do not give advice if people can manage without it.
However, responsible freedom is accountable freedom.
Autonomy without accountability will create a reckless organisation. Accountability drives peak performance.
Accountability ensures that the performers get recognised and rewarded while the non- performers are identified and corrected. Accountability will help the organisation to avoid the two often repeated blunders: One, endlessly tolerating a non- performer and two, not giving the performer his due recognition. The system of accountability will build an organisation of facts and figures instead of prejudices, pretensions and projections. Remember, what cannot be measured cannot be monitored.
For people who consistently fall short of accountable standards, alt39 Either mend them. Else end themalt39. One rotten tomato will spoil all the other tomatoes. Save the seeds from the weeds. And people who consistently live up to accountable standards, lift them in the organisation ladder and they, in turn, will lift the organisation.
