    New Delhi, India’s sugar output is expected to go down by almost 19 per cent this year, following anticipated poor crop yield in drought-affected states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

    Pawar sees pressure on sugar prices continuing next year

    New Delhi: Sugar prices are expected to remain under pressure due to an estimated supply gap of 3.5-4 million tonnes in the next marketing year starting October, former Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said today. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo also asked the industry to be prepared for any government action, including possibility of import of raw sugar to boost domestic supply and check prices.

  • Govt may cut sugar import duty to cool prices

    New Delhi: The government today said it will consider lowering import duty on sugar and banning exports of the sweetener if prices spike further from the current level. With retail prices crossing Rs 40/kg, the government has taken several steps, including imposition of stock holding limits on sugar traders and withdrawal of sugar output subsidy of Rs 4.50/kg to mills, in the last few weeks to check the price rise.
