    Power tariff cut by 6% for South Mumbai

    Mumbai: Ahead of the Ganesh festival and until Diwali, the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Authority (MERC) on Wednesday reduced power tariffs for South Mumbai by 6 to 8 per cent. However, consumers in North Mumbai will see up to a one per cent hike in current rates. According to Anand Kulkarni, chairman of MERC, this hike for North Mumbai is negligible.

    Mumbai: Metro work a nightmare, say SoBo residents

    Mumbai: South Mumbai residents are losing sleep over the prospect of 24-hour metro construction work after the Bombay High Court on Friday, allowed the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) to carry on construction work during nights as well. The decision came a year after the court had banned construction at night following residents’ complaints of noise pollution.

    Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of D-ward took action against ‘Spices and Flavours’ restaurant located at Girgoan on Tuesday for raising illegal structures in their restaurant area.  The D-civic ward comprises areas like Girgaon, Nepean Sea Road and other posh areas of South Mumbai.     Bombay HC directs BMC panel to inspect heritage Esplanade building

    Mumbai: The Bombay High Court directed the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today to inspect the heritage Esplanade building in South Mumbai and submit a report on whether it can be repaired. A bench of Justices Ranjit More and Anuja Prabhudessai also directed the TAC to submit its inspection report to the court by August 1 this year.

    Mumbai: The Esplanade mansion, a 150-year-old building recognised by UNESCO as a heritage structure, is today a monument in shambles and a disaster-in-waiting. The British-era multi-storey, considered to be the first building erected on pillars of cast iron, has got the UNESCO’s recognition as Grade II-A heritage structure, according to officials and conservationists. Grade II buildings are those which are of special interest and warrant all efforts to preserve them.

    Bombay High Court: No Metro III work at night in SoBo

    Mumbai: In a ‘temporary’ relief for South Mumbai residents, Bombay High Court on Wednesday clarified that it will not allow Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) to carry out tunnelling work for its controversial Metro III line, during the night hours in the Cuffe Parade area. The HC said work during night hours would ‘prima facie’ violate the fundamental right of citizens to live in a pollution-free environment.

    On Friday, residents of South Mumbai woke up and saw a huge amount of garbage piled up on the iconic coastal promenade of Marine Drive. The garbage washed onto the Marine Drive due to high tides in the sea and made it look a dump yard. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has claimed that they collected around nine tonnes of garbage from the iconic coastal promenade.

    Bombay High Court directs MPCB to record ambient noise levels

    Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the officials of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to record the ambient noise decibel levels at South Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade area, during the night hours. The HC said this exercise would help it to decide whether to allow the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) to work throughout the day and night in the area for the next 18 months for its Metro III

  • Mumbai: Lawyer arrested for assaulting pregnant wife, killing unborn child       

    Mumbai: The police has arrested a 30-year-old lawyer for allegedly assaulting his pregnant wife which led to the death of the unborn child, an official said today. The victim, who hails from New Delhi and is also a practising lawyer, got married to the man some months back and shifted to his residence at Colaba in south Mumbai.
