    Mumbai: BMC acquires disputed land near Byculla zoo

    Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Friday, finally acquired the seven acres of disputed land which had been leased to Mafatlal Mills. After the lease expired in 2012, BMC wanted the land back, but Mafatlal Mills submitted a plea in Bombay High Court (HC), claiming rights on the land. However, the court rejected the plea on August 16 and passed orders in BMC’s favour.

    Exclusive care for Humboldt penguins: BMC thinking of hiring private contractor

    Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed the appointment of a dedicated private contractor as caretaker of the Humboldt penguins and their enclosure at Byculla zoo (Veermata Jijabai Udyan). The appointed contractor will have to provide technical staff to maintain life support systems, air conditioning systems of the enclosure, provide good food to the penguins and extra veterinarians to look after them.

    Mumbai: After welcoming its newest inhabitant, a baby Humboldt penguin, on August 15, the  Veermata Jijabai Udyan (Byculla Zoo) has now decided to preserve the egg shell and CCTV footage for documentation and research. Sanjay Tripathi, veterinary doctor and zoo in-charge, said, “The egg shell fragments have been kept in the zoo centre and will be preserved. We also plan to put the shell on public display. The matter is pending discussion.”

    Mumbai: The Byculla Zoo will soon have a new member in its premises. Flipper, the four-and-a-half-year-old Humboldt penguin housed in Byculla zoo, laid an egg on Thursday after having mated with Mr Molt. Penguin eggs take 40 days to hatch, and if they things go smoothly, Flipper and Mr Molt’s nestling will be the first to be born in India, said Byculla zoo officials.

    Mumbai: Officials of Veer Jijamata Udyan, popularly known as Byculla Zoo, have written letters to various zoo across the country for swapping animals for the new seven enclosures they plan to construct.     Mumbai: BMC to speed up Byculla zoo revamp work

    Mumbai: The Garden Department of the civic body will soon undertake the second phase of the revamp work of the Veermata Jijabhai Bhosale Udyan, also popularly known as Byculla zoo. The civic body on Wednesday will table a proposal at the Standing Committee for construction of seven animal enclosures which are proposed to be brought in the zoo in the near future.     Mumbai: The Byculla zoo also popularly known as ‘Veer Jijamata Udyan’ earned a revenue of Rs 22.36 lakh in just four days of Diwali holidays. The zoo recently increased the entry fee from Rs 5 to a minimum of Rs 25 for individuals and Rs 100 for a family, while the zoo authorities claim that unwanted number of visitors decreased drastically but the earnings increased.
