Head to head
After 18 matches, both teams are deadlocked at nine wins apiece. But Mumbai Indians have a 6-3 lead in the last nine matches.
With the 10th season of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 underway in full flow, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) take on Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match No.22. The match will be played at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. This will be the final home game for Kings XI Punjab at Indore in this edition. So far in this edition, Kings XI have been unbeaten at the Holkar Stadium and they will aim to finish off their stay with a win against the resurgence Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai on a roll
Mumbai Indians are off to their best start in IPL history with four consecutive wins in five matches and only defeat being a 7-wicket loss to Rising Pune Supergiant. MI is currently third in the table, locked on 8 points with SRH and the leaders KKR, separated by net run rate. Tonight, MI would hope to better that record considering Kings XI have lost all three of their most recent games.
Kings XI have been let down by their foreign players with the batting ‘foursome’ of Glenn Maxwell, David Miller, Eion Morgan and Hashim Amla are unable to fire. In their match against SRH, they scored a combined 24 runs. This could be reason enough of KXIP to switch things around depending on the fitness of Shaun Marsh and Martin Guptill. Sandeep Sharma and Akshar Patel have held the bowling front strong. Mohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma and KC Cariappa need to raise their game if Kings XI Punjab have any chance of topping Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians’ captain Rohit Sharma has not been opening batsman he feels his experience is needed in the middle order. That strategy works with Nitish Rana doing well at No. 3 who is also the team’s top run-scorer. Rana has been Mumbai Indians’ batsman of the season. Both Krunal and Hardik have displayed composure and aggression in times of need. Captain Rohit has found his mojo in the last match. Kieron Pollard’s contribution to the side cannot be undermined after his match-winning knock against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Their bowling duties are being guided by Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh. MI heavily rely on Mitchell McClenaghan to provide early wickets and restrict the flow of runs in the death overs along with ever-dependable Jasprit Bumrah. Adding the mix Krunal and Hardik makes for a potent attack.
