Mumbai : CCI’s Gauri Ghate and Hrissha Dubey bagged a triple crown each, while Nigel D’Sa won the men’s title, in the CCI-GMBA badminton championship, at the Cricket Club of India.
Returning to competition after a hiatus, unseeded Gauri Ghate, who surprised second seed Kareena Madan in the semi-finals, turned giant-killer when she overcame top seed Riya Arolkar 21-8, 21-8. A supremely confident Ghate later added the doubles crown when she teamed up with Akshaya Warang to beat Kareena Madan and Natasha Daswani 21-7, 21-18, and the mixed doubles title with Siddhesh Aroskar.
Hrissha Dubey helped herself to the girls’ under-15 and under-17 individual titles and added the under-19 doubles crown, besides finishing runner-up in the under-17 doubles. Top seed D’Sa of Customs rallied from a tight opening game and the loss of the second to fashion an impressive 21-19, 14-21, 21-9 win over second seed Viplav Kuvale of ESIC in the men’s final.
Shubham Pal, also of CCI, earned a double with the boys’ under-17 individual and doubles titles, while Rudra Rane of Jitesh Padukone Academy upset top seed Riya Arolkar for the girls’ under-19 crown and added the under-17 doubles title with Sania Shivalkar. Top seed Darius Pardiwala won the boys’ under-13 crown for the third year in a row.
