The state Election Commission has directed all the candidates in recent BMC elections, winners as well as losers, to furnish a statement of expenditure. If they fail to furnish the details in 30 days, they will have to face a law suit, informed Additional Municipal Commissioner Aseem Gupta on Wednesday.
To put a brake on the incessant expenditures incurred during the election season, the Election Commission had put restrictions on spending money per candidate. Accordingly, every candidate had been directed to open a separate bank account and deposit an amount of Rs 5 lakh. The candidates were also asked to submit information about total receipts and expenditure incurred.
A total of 2233 candidates were in the fray for the elections and all of these have incurred expenses. Generally, candidates are known to incur huge amount of expenses during election season, many times going out of the way and out of limits put down by the EC.
