Most of the schemes of the state government are ostensibly for the welfare of the girl child and chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan is giving top priority to the welfare of girls.
The state government may have launched Ladli Laxmi, Kanyadaan, Gaon Ki Beti and Beti Bachao campaigns and schemes for the welfare of girls but it has failed to ensure safety of the girls and the figures of rape cases are a testimony to this fact. In the backof Chauhans Beti Bachao campaign, launched in October 2011, the figures of rape case reported from November, '11 to January '12 may be embarrassing for the state government.
According to information given by home minister Umashankar Gupta as a reply to written question in the House, 797 rape cases were registered in the state in the last three months, including 721 rape cases and 76 gang rapes.
The most shocking fact in these figures is the state Capital Bhopal is leading in rape cases where 39 rape cases, including 38 rapes and 1 gang rape, were registered in the said duration.
As many as 33 rape cases were registered in Sagar, 32 in Jabalpur, 28 in Dhar and Vidisha, 27 in Ujjain, Shivpuri and Chindwara and 22 in Indore.
