Mumbai: Four persons were arrested in connection with the death of a youth who succumbed to injuries sustained in a clash between two communities which erupted following the murder of a member of one group over alleged illicit relationship. Four persons were arrested after a mob of 100 people including family members of the youth stormed a police station in suburban Khar here today demanding the arrest of culprits.
According to police, the trouble began a week ago, when one Dinesh, a resident of Jawahar Nagar in Khar, murdered his neighbour Nasir who was allegedly having an affair with Dinesh’s wife.
Dinesh later surrendered before police. After the incident, a scuffle broke out between the friends of Dinesh and Nasir in which Vikash Gawde was seriously injured. He succumbed to his wounds last night, police said. Subsequently, about 100 people, including family members and neighbours of Vikash staged a protest in front of the Nirmal Nagar police station with the victim’s body this morning, demanding immediate arrests of those involved.
The incident also led to tension in the communally sensitive area. “We have arrested four people in this connection (Gawde’s death). Efforts are on to nab other accused, who are underground,” said Sudhir Jambavdekar, senior Police Inspector, Nirmal Nagar Police station.
We have also provided adequate security in the area to avoid any untoward incident, he said. On the other hand, the victim’s side claimed that police haven’t made any arrests as claimed. “Police haven’t made any arrests because when we asked them to reveal the names of the accused, they refused,” said, one of the neighbours of the victim. “We have given time till tomorrow evening and if action is not taken by then, we will launch a bigger agitation,” he said.
