To pay off debts, man steals gold from partner’s firm

Mumbai: The MHB Colony police have arrested a man within 48 hours of stealing his partner’s gold worth Rs 43 lakh from a gold jewellery manufacturing unit. The police have booked the man under section relevant to robbery and cheating. Police sources said, the accused and the complainant were partner and were running a gold jewellery manufacturing unit in Dahisar since two years. On Thursday night, the accused shut down the unit for the day and decamped with 1.5 kg of gold worth Rs 43 lakh. When the complainant came to know about the theft, he tried contacting the accused, but saw no luck, following which a formal complaint was registered with the MHB Colony police on Friday.

“Further probe in the case revealed that the accused was in touch with a few relatives and friends. Based on this information, we laid a trap, tracked his movements and then arrested him near a garden on Sunday morning,” said an official. The police teams were then sent to recover the stolen goods which was hidden at his friend’s house. Prima facie, the police have found that the accused had a lot of debts to repay, and saw the large quantities of gold as an easy way to get away with debts and financial crisis.
