On Friday, a 28-year-old sub-inspector attempted suicide by drinking phenyl at her home in Vartak Nagar, Thane. The woman sub-inspector, who is attached with Kapurbawdi police station, took this drastic step after she was allegedly harassed by senior inspector V G Darekar.

According to Mid-Day, the victim, who has been identified as Sharda Deshmukh (28), is now going through treatment and is now stable. In the meanwhile, Darekar has been temporarily shifted to the control room, an inquiry will be initiated. Sharda Deshmukh has alleged that she was mistreated after Darekar faced flak following the Prachi Zade case — the girl was stabbed to death by a stalker on August 4 on the Eastern Express highway in Thane, after which her family had blamed Darekar for not taking action against the accused.

One day, Darekar asked for details on a case from Sharda Deshmukh, after which he allegedly yelled at her and abused her in front of everyone. Even other police personnel working at Kapurbawdi police station have alleged that Darekar never speaks properly with juniors, uses very bad language.

“I have ordered DCP Avinash Ambure to carry out an inquiry into the matter and submit a report. We have shifted the senior inspector to control room. I will make sure that juniors can fearlessly come to seniors and share their issues, and also arrange to counsel for them,” Commissioner of Police, Thane, Vivek Phansalkar told the leading daily.
