Mumbai: Teachers are irked by the never-ending admission process for the First Year Junior College (FYJC). Teachers claim that practically every day one student is being given admission and they have to go back and for-th with the syllabus. The first semester examinations are near but the portion cannot be completed due to this constant continuous addition.
The FYJC admission process has been going on since July. And every week new students are admitted through merit lists, special rounds and first come, first served criteria. Nidhi Jain, a professor, said, “We have to cater to all the students. We cannot leave out any student just because their admission was late. And just for the sake of two to three students we have to teach the same portion to the entire class again or sometimes conduct extra classes.”
In addition, the first semester examinations will be conducted in October. A college principal, on request of anonymity, said, “First of all, the admission process is going on till now. Secondly, there are festival holidays and examinations are approaching. The college faculties have to juggle and fight against time to help complete the syllabus.”
Students mentioned that they were helpless as they were getting admitted even one month after the colleges have started their academic year. A student said, “There are some teachers who repeat the lessons and help us with what we have missed. But some teachers do not bother. We suffer ultimately because we have to appear for the examinations.”
On the contrary, the State Education Department stated that it is better late than never. BB Chavan, Deputy Director of Education (Mumbai region), said, “The admission process will go on till the last student gets admission. The process is prolonged but it is better late than having some students without admissions.” Over 2,000 students are yet to be admitted and round 2 of ‘First Come First Served’ has been initiated.
