Mumbai : Sujitsingh Thakur, who is one of the general secretaries of the party, may emerge as the consensus candidate for the state unit president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), sources have said.
Different names were being discussed for the post for over a month now, when it was confirmed that Devendra Fadnavis would become the Chief Minister. The most likely candidate after Fadnavis, to get the post was Chandrakant Patil. He hails from Western Maharashtra, where the party fared better in Parliamentary as well as the Assembly elections. He also has a vast experience in running organisation. But, after his inclusion in the state cabinet, focus of the discussions shifted to other names. BJP high-command was said to have been in search of a new face, for the post of state party president. The party leaders wanted to elevate a young but experienced leader to the post and they are said to have zeroed in on Thakur’s name.
The state BJP’s core committee, which met here on Saturday, also approved Thakur’s name.
It discussed a few names apart from Surjitsingh Thakur. But, Thakur’s name was finalised keeping in mind his organisational skills, sources said.
Thakur, who was said to be very close to late Gopinath Munde, has headed party’s state youth wing earlier. He had also been instrumental in organising the ‘Sangharsh Yatra’ which helped BJP in North Maharashtra and Marathwada in a big way during assembly elections.
