In a shocking incident, two 12-year-old girls were allegedly gang-raped in Pune. The girls were raped in broad daylight during a visit to the local temple, out of which one of the victims died yesterday.

According to Mid-Day, the incident took place on Sunday at around 3.30 pm, when the girls visited the Sant Tukaram Maharaj temple in Hinjewadi, around a 1-km walk from their homes. Senior Inspector Shivaji Gaware from Hinjewadi police station told the leading daily, “Both the girls are 12 years old. The accused lured them with sweets, took them to the bushes and gang-raped them.”

However, this entire incident came to light on Wednesday, when one of the victims was rushed to hospital after she started complaining of severe weakness. She was found to be under trauma and was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). After this, the victim slipped into a coma and on Wednesday was declared dead by the doctors.

The police have arrested Ganesh Nikam, who is a labourer in a sugar factory, and detained a 17-year-old. The police have booked both under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for gang rape and kidnapping, along with the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
