Bhayandar : Citing huge revenue losses, the BJP-ruled Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) had decided to resume the process of including slum-dwellers in the property tax ambit.
However, after racking their collective brains for more than a year, the civic administration has finally come out with a new methodology to assess tax on slums. As per the new system, the property tax wing will assess only those hutments which are registered under the centre sponsored-Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojana (PMAY). Owing to large scale irregularities coupled by an alarming rise in corrupt practices, the MBMC had stopped assessing and transferring existing title of hutments in slum clusters a few years ago.
There are 44 slum clusters across the twin-city and the number of hutments in them is rising. Official statistics sourced from the MBMC confirms the same. While the official survey of pre and post 2,000 slums recorded the presence of 27,409 tenements in the 44 slum clusters, only 17, 262 have been tagged as beneficiaries under the PMAY. MBMC officials contended that since PMAY isAadhaar-based and will eliminate graft.
