Code of Conduct comes into effect
Mumbai: The State Election Commission (SEC) on Monday announced that elections of over 200 municipal council and Nagar Panchayat will be held in the state between November and January next year. The polls for 192 Municipal Councils and 20 Nagar Panchayats will be held in four phases, State Election Commissioner J S Saharia announced.
“The polling will be held on November 27, December 14, December 18 and January 8, 2017. The counting will be done on the next day of the poll,” Saharia told reporters. He added that the electoral Code of Conduct in these areas shall come into effect immediately.
Saharia said that in all elections will be held for 4,750 seats, and of theses 2,445 seats are reserved for women, 607 seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste, 198 seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and 1,315 seats are reserved for Other Backward Caste category.
According to SEC, 147 Municipal Councils and 18 Nagar Panchayats will go to polls on November 27, while 14 Municipal Councils will go to polls on December 14. The election for the remaining 31 Municipal Councils and two Nagar Panchayats will be held on December 18 and January 8.
Saharia said that the President of the Municipal Council will be elected directly by the voters. “Computerised software has been prepared so that the contestants can file their nomination papers,” Saharia said.
