Mumbai: Soon, minibus service for small lanes

Mumbai: In a bid to ease the city’s busy roads, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will soon launch a minibus that will specifically run on small lanes across the city. A proposal to start a minibus led by Rais Shaikh, Samajwadi Party leader, was tabled at the group leaders meeting on Thursday.

The proposal was accepted by group leaders and civic chief Ajoy Mehta. Shaikh said, “Mehta was positive on implementing the plan. However, feasibility of launching a minibus on city roads will be tested after which decision will be taken.”

The bus would save cost as a minibus gives a better mileage, Shaikh claimed. “We have to do something about the city’s traffic congestion. The roads are clogged with buses, taxis, bikes, cars etc. If these issues are not addressed soon, then it might lead to a bigger problem.”

The budget for starting the minibus will be included in the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport’s (BEST) annual budget. The routes and lanes for the minibus would be decided by the BEST in a way that it should not affect the city’s traffic.
