Mumbai: Shiv Sena plays Dalit card, wants dry days on Ambedkar anniversaries

Mumbai: With Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti around the corner, Shiv Sena on Monday demanded the state government declare April 14 and December 6, the days on which he was born and died, as dry days. The Leader of House from Sena, Yashwant Jadhav, also demanded that additional security officials should be provided in rallies during Ambedkar Jayanti across Maharashtra.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday held a meeting with ward officials of Dadar (G north) to prepare for Ambedkar Jayanti. However, Jadhav alleged Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar was not invited for the meeting.

Jadhav said, “All important decisions for preparation of Ambedkar Jayanti are held under the guidance of Mayor. It is the civic body who manages and spends for organising events at Dadar’s Chaityabhoomi, a memorial to Ambedkar. How can he hold such an important meeting without calling us on an event that we have been organizing for years?” Ward officials were unavailable for a comment.

Last year, the civic body had spent Rs 1 crore for hosting the event of Ambedkar Jayanti at Chaityabhoomi. Speaking about the need of security force during rallies, Jadhav said, “Dadar’s Shivaji Park witnesses a heavy influx of visitors during Ambedkar Jayanti. The security officials provided during the event are inadequate.”

Along with Mahadeshwar, Jadhav said that organizers of events and rallies of Ambedkar Jayanti run from pillar to post to acquire No Objection Certificate, permissions and licences from authorities. Jadhav therefore demanded a single window system for organizers to get permission.

“A single window system should be implemented for clearing permissions from Police, Traffic and BMC in order to ease the tiring process of acquiring permissions.”
