Mumbai: There is no letup in the tussle between the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation and the Bombay Gymkhana, with yet another setback to the elite club. This time round, the Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO) bungalow, constructed on the premises of the Gymkhana, is to be razed once the Development Plan (DP) of 2014-34 is approved.
Earlier in 2016, the BMC wrote a letter to the city collector to seek the gymkhana’s land, including the CEO’s bungalow, a storeroom, a fitness centre and a generator room, among several other structures, for widening of Hazarimal Somani Marg from the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus subway till the MG road. However, the Gymkhana members vehemently opposed the civic body proposal, claiming that the bungalow is a heritage structure.
A senior civic officer claimed that the proposed project of road widening has been marked in the new DP of 2014-34. And as the proposal is before the state government, if approved as it is, they would go ahead with their plans. “If the state gives an approval then we just have to intimate the collector office for necessary action to be taken and the work would start,” the officer of BMC said.
In a telephonic conversation, R N Ranjan, the CEO of Bombay Gymkhana, said, “We have received the copy of the DP on Sept 8. Once we go through it and study the plan we would decide our stand.” Gymkhana vice president Bharat Raut remained unavailable for comment despite repeated calls and messages.
The BMC proposes to widen the road and will use a major portion of the Gymkhana land for this. The BMC also plans to construct a pedestrian plaza that will cut into a sizeable portion of the clubhouse. The BMC has rubbished claims that the bungalow is a heritage structure. In addition, the civic body is yet to renew the club lease agreement. Meanwhile, as reported by the Free Press Journal, due to shortage of resources, the process of lease renewals has been delayed.
