Mumbai: Rash driver injures two school children, one critical


Mumbai: The Naupada police station arrested one person for rash driving and speeding at Damani Estate at Vishnu Nagar in Thane (W). The arrested person has been identified as Dilip Gunjal (30). Two school children have been injured in the accident.

Gunjal was driving a Maruti Suzuki VXI when he suddenly lost control  which resulted in an accident at Damani Estate in Thane on Saturday afternoon. The siblings Parth Kotak (8) and Jiya Kotak (6) were walking on the road when suddenly Dilip Gunjal who was at the steering lost control and his car hit the children from behind and ran over them.

Gunjal tried to run away from the spot but a passerby chased Gunjal and caught hold of him. “I received a phone call informing about the accident. Gunjal’s car number was noted down and he was traced. He has been arrested,” said Anil Pophale, Senior Police Inspector, Naupada police station.

The registration number of the Maruti Suzuki VX is MH-04-GZ-9906.

The siblings were immediately rushed to Jupiter hospital in Thane. Parth and Jiya have suffered multiple fractures and they are presently being treated at Jupiter hospital in Thane. Jiya’s condition is said to be critical.

The Naupada police have arrested Dilip Gunjal under Section 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and Section 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) , Section 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 184 (driving dangerously) of the Motor Vehicle Act.
