Bhayandar: After much dilly-dallying over collection of solid waste management cess, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has finally imposed service charge for garbage collection from residents and owners of commercial establishments in the twin-city from April 1.

While the standing committee on Monday gave its nod to levy the tax, the resolution will be tabled before the general body for a final approval. With an aim of meeting financial resources for effective waste management services, the civic administration had proposed an annual user service charge of Rs 195 and Rs 895 for residential and commercial properties respectively.

“To ease the tax burden, we revised the tax structure by levying Re 1 per sq. ft. annual tax for residential (maximum charge restricted at Rs 2000) and Rs 1.50 per sq.ft. for commercial entities capping its upper limit at Rs 15,000,” said standing committee chairman Dhruv Kishor Patil. However, hotels, restaurants and banquet halls will have to pay Rs 3 per sq.ft. with maximum charge restricted at Rs 10,000 per annum.
