Mumbai: The BMC administrative department has issued a circular on May 9 saying that all communication and work should be conducted in Marathi language only. The civic official said “If any officer or clerk refuses to speak or write in Marathi stern action will be taken against them.”

A senior civic official said it is not the first time such a circular has been issued. Earlier, too, in 1988, 1999, 2013 and 2014 similar notices were issued, but were not followed by all. “It is the fifth time that such a circular has been issued and this time the use of Marathi language has been mandated in the corporation,” added the official.

A senior official added, “The civic administrative department has asked all the senior officials to use the Marathi language for all the civic work.”
