Mumbai: KEM forensic head seeks police security, fearing attack from Shiv Sena

Mumbai: The KEM hospital forensic head, Dr Harish Pathak has written to the Mumbai Police Commissioner demanding police security over fear of physical assault by Shiv Sena members. This comes after six Shiv Sainiks had attacked Dr Pathak over the handling of dead bodies regarding the Elphinstone stampede.

On Monday, Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana published an article claiming the six Shiv Sainiks had come to KEM for blood donation and were falsely charged with attacking Dr Pathak. Subsequently, six Sena corporators and MLAs met hospital dean Dr Avinash Supe to discuss the matter. “I explained to them about the incident,” Supe said, reported The Indian Express.

“The newspaper article said Shiv Sena members are disgruntled with me and the police for registering a case against those who came to attack me. I wanted to request the CP to ensure a second attack does not come my way,” said Dr Pathak.

The said incident happened on September 30, a day after the Elphinstone Road station stampede, Dr Pathak was attacked in the hospital mortuary over his decision to write numbers on the deceased victims’ foreheads for quick identification. Shiv Sainiks from Pune, Shirdi and Virar had travelled to Mumbai were agitated and wanted to write ‘zero’ on Pathak’s forehead. The victims had numbers written on their foreheads, pictures of which were printed on flex and displayed at the hospital for family members to identify the dead bodies.
