Mumbai: Chhota Rajan’s former aide DK Rao arrested over extortion charges

Mumbai: Gangster Ravi Mallesh Bora alias DK Rao, a former aide of Chhota Rajan, was arrested on Thursday late night by Mumbai crime branch for allegedly seeking to extort Rs 50 lakhs from a builder.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Rao by a builder at Antop Hill police station. According to the complainant, the project in Antop Hill was on since 2013 and the builder had received approval. Later the work was stopped on Rao’s instructions. The complainant was informed that no further work would be carried on without Rao’s permission. Rao then demanded Rs 50 lakhs from the builder.

According to Dilip Sawant, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, “Rao was running an extortion racket targetting builders. In June, Rao called the complainant and threatened him. An extortion demand for Rs. 50 lakhs was then made. The builder was asked to deliver the money at Dharavi.”

“More complaints will be registered in the coming days and more accused will be arrested soon. We have urged more complainants to come forward,” added Sawant. Rao has been remanded to police custody till October 18.

Rao was lodged in Taloja jail for a year and released in July 2016. Rao is known to be an old-time Chhota Rajan loyalist, notorious for his role in planning murders of the accused in the 1993 bomb blasts at Rajan’s behest, after the latter severed ties with Dawood Ibrahim and his brother Iqbal Kaskar.
