Mumbai: BMC’s standing committee members on Wednesday alleged that the civic officials on octroi points are involved in theft. Councillors said that even though Goods and Services Tax (GST) is set to be rolled out by July this year, the officials have already started allowing vehicles inside the city without letting them pay octroi.
The allegations were made after a Congress councillor helped civic officials spot an octroi evasion at Bhandup. The councillor had caught eight trucks which had items worth Rs 4 crore and had entered Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg without paying octroi. Leader of Opposition, Ravi Raja, demanded a probe into the octroi department. Raja has also written to the civic chief Ajoy Mehta and Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar to probe the matter.
