Mumbai: BMC to blacklist tainted contractors who were found breaching waste segregation norms

Mumbai: The solid waste management (SWM) department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) would soon black list seven tainted contractors who found mixing concrete debris and breaching the norms of waste segregation. Vijay Balamwar, deputy municipal commissioner (DMC) of the SWM department, stated that the trap set by his officials caught them red handed and therefore after a formal complaint filed in Kurla and Vikroli police station, the civic officials have also served show-cause notices to them.

He further stated, “Even after undertaking so many initiatives by SWM department no declination in waste collection was found. Therefore, surprise checks and videography was done at waste segregation centres, dumping ground, refugee transport stations which helped them to disclose the scam.”

BMC pays Rs 785 per tonnes to contractors for transporting wet and dry waste. Therefore, by increasing the weight of garbage and more number of trips to the dumping ground these contractors were earning a hefty amount of money from the BMC. Balamwar said, “After the entire scam disclosed by his team the bills are now being paid to the contractors only after checking the CCTV footage.”

The DMC also claimed that after the trap set the garbage collection of the city daily has dropped down from 9,500 metric tonnes to 7, 700 metric tonnes. The tainted contractors are BCD JV, Decondoid JV, MK Enterprise JV, PWG JV, Kaviraj MBB and SKIPL-MK.
