Mumbai: The 19th Jio MAMI film festival will begin from October 12-18. It will showcase 200 films across 18 screens in the city. The festival will open with ‘Mukkabaaz’ (The Brawler) by Anurag Kashyap. It is a film based in Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh and about boxing, with sports still being the flavour of Bollywood. The previous popular Bollywood sports films being ‘Sultan’ starring Salman Khan and ‘Daangal’ starring Aamir Khan. ‘Mukkabaaz’ will star Vineet Kumar Singh.
Ten interesting films have been selected for the Indian Gold section and 12 films selected in the International Competition section. There is also a section titled ‘Dimensions Mumbai’ showcasing the different aspects of Mumbai city, which has 17 films in it.
The Jio MAMI 19th Mumbai Film Festival with Star announced a selection of the best French cinema of this year as part of its Rendezvous with French Cinema section, which celebrates contemporary French film-making. Rendezvous features the hottest and the most scintillating titles of 10 films that have garnered worldwide praise at festivals all over the world.
A tribute to the late Om Puri is a special feature of the festival, with ‘Ardh Satya’, ‘East is East’, ‘Jaane Bhi do Yaaro’, ‘Patang’ and ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’ will be screened. Incidentally, his iconic film ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ is being seen as a befitting tribute by many film lovers, especially since the director of the film, Kundan Shah died suddenly last week.
The third edition of ‘After Dark’, which showcases the genre of thrillers and in extreme measures will be showcased. The much awaited world cinema section will showcase films of renowned filmmakers. It includes a film by Roman Polanski’s ‘D’Apres Une Histoire Vraie’, which is based on a true story. The list of films also includes a battery of women filmmakers like Sally Potter and Lana Wilson.
