Mumbai : The Dadabhai Nauroji Nagar police in Andheri West on Saturday arrested the father of a school-going girl, whom he had been allegedly sexually exploiting since January 2016. The accused, 38-year-old Ali Mohammad, is a tailor.
Ali Mohammad has been booked for rape, molestation and various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The girl has been handed over to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
The matter came to light when the victim, all of 14 years and studying in Class VII, told her friends and teacher in the school about the horrific incident. The school teacher promptly got in touch with the minor’s mother and then sent the girl to Cooper hospital for medical tests.
The girl’s mother had tried to reason with her husband but was apparently threatened with dire consequences. After medical reports confirmed rape, the school authorities got in touch with a Bandra-based NGO. The NGO referred the case to Child Welfare Committee (CWC) officials. The CWC wrote a letter to the police station seeking immediate action against the accused.
“We received the CWC letter on March 14. We sent a police team that included women to the school and recorded the statement of the teacher and the victim,” said senior inspector of DN Nagar police station Dhanaji Nalawade. “The girl was sexually exploited whenever her mother was not at home,” Nalawade added.
However, sources told Free Press Journal that neither the school teacher nor the NGO or CWC officials registered an FIR. The DN Nagar police have registered a case suo motto. “The accused was arrested on March 16. He has been sent to police custody till March 23,” Nalawade said.
Ali Mohammad is from Bihar and has been staying in Mumbai for the last 10 years. He had shifted to a chawl in Andheri (West) in 2014. The victim was staying with her parents and in a rented accommodation. She is the eldest among three sisters and a brother.
