Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday conducted an eviction drive at the busy Nagpada junction, located in South Mumbai (E-ward ) removing around 30 illegal hawkers to ease traffic congestion and make teh footpath pedestrian friendly.
Residents of the area joined hands with BMC (E-ward) officers to clear the junction which was encroached by illegal hawkers. Now, the civic body has barricaded the entire lane so as to avoid any future encroachment of the place.
The move came after members of around 11 residential buildings of Madanpura area collectively raised their voice against illegal hawkers and illegal vehicle parking at the junction, choking the place and posing a nuisance for the pedestrians.
“This eviction is the first stage of the Nagpada improvement program. It will continue until the hawkers become habituated to this and restrict themselves from further encroachment,” said Kishor Desai, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of E ward.
According to the officer, bag sellers and illegal parking by taxi drivers was common over the place. After this drive, they are expecting smooth traffic flow.
