Edu panel member calls off hunger stir for bonus


Mumbai : BMC Education Committee member Shivnath Darade has called off his hunger strike demanding bonus for the civic body’s secondary school teachers after an assurance from the civic chief.

“Deputy Mayor Alka Kerkar discussed the matter with me. The commissioner has agreed to give a written assurance,” said Darade, adding that the civic chief has said he would find out why the bonus was stopped.

BMC gives bonus to primary school teachers of its own as well as of private-aided schools. Between 1988 and 1999, secondary school teachers used to get bonus. Afterwards, it stopped, though primary teachers continued to get it.
