Police add names of pub chain’s directors after BJP’s Ashish Shelar raises issue
Mumbai : Two days after the issue was brought to light, the names of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and all other directors of one of the branches of popular bar chain Social have been included in the First Information Report (FIR). The police decision came after the persuasion of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) heavyweight Ashish Shelar.
The FIR was registered at Dindoshi police station after the Christian community found the decor of the establishment at Oberoi Mall, Goregaon (East) as ‘blasphemous’. But the police had registered a case without any names in the complaint.
“The case was not registered against any individual. Now it has come on record that the names of CEO and all others directors have been reflected after my persuasion,” Shelar told Free Press Journal.
“Following my complaint, police has registered a case against Riyaaz Amlani and management team of Social for hurting Christian sentiments. More objects hurtful of sentiments were found in the pub.
The process for getting them removed has been initiated,” Shelar tweeted on Saturday.
Within hours after a FIR was filed by a Non Government Organisation (NGO) – Watchdog Foundation, the pub removed all the controversial elements from its interior on November 2.
Its CEO also tendered a ‘complete and unconditional apology’ on behalf of group to the Archdiocese of Mumbai for hurting the religious sentiments.
The complaint was filed by former corporator Nicholas Almeida terming the “blasphemy an act of insult” that showed lack of reverence to a religion. A senior police official said a case under section 295(A) of IPC has been registered and an inquiry is underway into the matter.
