Mumbai : The Thane police are probing the case of Sagar Thakkar, the mastermind in the alleged multi-crore call center scam.
Meanwhile, Thane crime branch sleuths have seized the Audi-R8 (HR 26 BW 0018), which Thakkar had purchased from Indian cricketer Virat Kohli in May this year.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Parag Manere of Thane crime branch, “We have seized the Audi-R8, which Thakkar had purchased from Virat Kohli through an agent for Rs 70 lakh. Kolhi was unaware of the background of Thakkar and is not connected to the call center scam.”
“We have seized the vehicle from Rohtak in Haryana, where it was hidden in a garage belonging to the residence of one of the friends of Thakkar. We will interrogate Thakkar’s relatives whenever necessary. We are further probing the matter,” said another police officer.
According to the police, in 2012, the Audi model was worth Rs 3 crore when Kohli first bought it. Sagar had paid Rs 50 lakh to the cricketer and was to pay Rs 20 lakh more. However, theownership had not been transferred to Thakkar as he was yet to submit his PAN card.
Meanwhile, the US Justice Department on Friday charged 61 persons in connection with the scam, in which the call centre staffers would call up US citizens, posing as their Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials. They would threaten the US citizens to instantly settle “tax defaults” by making a payment to them.
“We suspect that Sagar Thakkar alias Shaggy is still in Dubai along with his sister Reema. We are trying to probe if those charged by the US Justice Department are involved in the scam here,” said Manere.
The scam was busted on October 5 with the Thane police raiding 12 call centres in the Mira Road-Bhayander area.
