Pune: Hitting out at the BJP government, Kanhaiya Kumar, former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union, on Friday said that the ruling party intents to amend the constitution and want the rule of Manu Smriti.
While interacting with the media a day before his program ‘Sangh ya Constitution’ in Pune he said that “We need to save the constitution against it.”
Kumar said, “The nation has been witnessing violence in large scale currently. Soldiers were killed in Chhattisgarh. People having cows are attacked by so called nationalists. A number of farmers suicide has gone up. Students across the country have been facing discrimination like never before. More than 50% students from IIT and IIMs are not being able to get jobs. Software companies have begun to let off their employees on big scale.”
He added, “Constitution has taken back seat and violence is increasing. The root of the problem is the ruling BJP wants to amend Constitution and wants to spread ideology of Manu Smriti. That is why state has been failing on various fronts. And it is worrisome.” He further said, “We have to save the Constitution and stop Manu Smriti becoming guided force across the nation.”
Jignesh Mevani, a social activist and lawyer from Gujrat, said, “Gujrat model of development is nothing but communal, fascist and corporate loot. The nation is facing problems like love jihad, farmers suicides, distorted labour laws, attacks by cow vigilantes and so on. Minority people are living under fear. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not talk on these issues. They want to take the nation back to medieval time and try to get Manu Smriti’s rule.”
Shehla Rashid, former vice president, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union, said, “Modi government is completing three years in power, FTII movement is completing two years and Una incident is completing one year in coming few days. On the occasion, we want to people to demand freedom of equality, right to food, right to employment, right to health care. There should not be unconstitutional Romeo Squads, EVM frauds and problem like this.”
