Bhayandar: While some corporators are cooling off at hill stations under the garb of study tours, office-bearers in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) including the mayor, deputy mayor, standing committee chairman, opposition leader, house leader, and group leaders of political parties wants the civic administration to emulate the Indore pattern to initiate an efficient waste management plan ensuring scientific disposal of  garbage generated in the twin-city.

This after their recent visit to Indore which has  not only bagged the top spot in the pan India Swachhta Surveys, but has minimised expenses by introducing cost effective measures. A proposal, to this effect has been tabled before the civic administration.

“Yes, a proposal inked with information gathered from Indore by the participants has been placed before us. We will go through it and see what changes and incorporation can be made to enhance the efficiency of our garbage collection,” confirmed civic chief- B.G.Pawar. However, analysts are skeptical about its implementation owing to the politically backed cartel of contractors who have been creating huge distortions resulting in huge monetary gains for themselves and all the sanctioning authority in the process.

“We have submitted our report which is very much viable. Now, it is up to the administration to take a call for implementing the Indore pattern in our city,” said deputy mayor Chandrakant Vaity.  Funding towards the day-to-day cleanliness and ferrying garbage to the dumping grounds is a major concern for the MBMC as its expenses have touched the roof owing to a significant jump in population and rabid urbanisation. With generation of garbage increasing from 350 to 550 metric tonnes per day, the proposed funding outlay has registered an upward revision from Rs. 80 crore to Rs. 128 crore, this compounded by additional financial burden owing to mandated approval by the civic administration in adherence to govt rules towards a hike in minimum wages of contractual workers.
