Belinda Earl, Marks & Spencer Styling Director speaks to Shikha Jain about their latest collection and this season’s wardrobe must haves
Style is about giving customers confidence to go about their daily lives, because if one looks stylish and reflect the colour trends then you have an alt to the fashion. It is also about self-worth and we know our customers really respond to us. It is like developing your own super-style handwriting, says Belinda Earl, Global Style Director of Marks & Spencer.
Marks & Spencer Spring Summer 18 collection is inspired by All Things Natural and was showcased recently.
Glam up, girls
She talks about the key trends of the Spring Summer Collection 2018, which they have categorised into four themes. Being Explorer the first one, it introduces warm colours of khaki and aubergine with natural fabrics and one will also botanical prints coming through.
Horizon, sees a classic Spring mood reworked in a crisp palette of reds, blues and greys in pieces like the pinstripe shirts and dresses with new shapes and high attention to detail.
The natural and tactile fabrics of Global are given a luxurious Summer touch with feminine dresses and flowing layers offset against tailored blazers offering a chic combination using a warm colour palette.
Colour moves in a confident direction throughout the Summer months and into Art Haus. Vivid print combinations create a fresh take on the new season, from outerwear to beachwear, as the colour rules are reimagined.
Fashion for men
Within our men’s wear, we have a very strong business in those strong classic looks, we work through into the season Polo shirts and strong emphasis on casual shirts, Earl adds. Meanwhile the menswear collections bring a focus on great style, fit and quality. Casual menswear collections offer shades of peach to mint greens through bright blues. Block colour and bold prints are seen across separates and can be mixed and matched for a vibrant look, she further says.
First thing first
There are some keepings like dresses. Early in the season we saw shirt dresses to be very much in trend then moving into shift dresses, more casual summer dresses came in as the season progressed, she says. The other thing that is very important is the trousers, skinny leg that does very well here, as well as the wider legs, cropped legs. Since, there are number of different leg shapes so, we see the trouser being very essential, she adds. Tops, both knitted and woven are very required in terms of how one makes the outfit look whether its casual or formal.
Fashion then and now
She claims her customers have become more aware of the looks of they want to create and they also seem to be influenced now on conceiving in terms of where they get their ideas and inspirations from, particularly from social media.
We really invested in the quality and the cuts, Earl emphasises, adding that the collection is very relevant to our customers. Fantastic value for money in terms of workmanship that has gone into the collection. A lot more attention to details using prints and embroideries, beautifully designed styles on quiet and clean lines, she further adds.
According to her, they make fashion much more available. They try and put all the looks together, then if it’s about going to the airport or to the malls or anywhere else. They offer office to night look. They look at what our customers like, what the trends are predicting and what fabrics and laces are being predicting. They do pre-shows and events and fashion shows happen four times a year, two major ones and two minor ones.
