Delhi: A man gets 10 years jail for possessing 15 kg opium


New Delhi, A man has been sent to 10 years in jail for possessing over 15 kg of opium by a Delhi court which also slapped a fine of Rs one lakh on him.

The court awarded the jail term to convict Vardhi Chand, a resident of Rajasthan, while considering that he was carrying a large quantity of the banned substance and the impact the intoxicating drug would have on youths.

“Keeping in view the commercial quantity of opium recovered from his possession and impact of intoxicating drugs on our youth and also the minimum sentence provided by the legislature, convict Vardhi Chand is hereby sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 10 years and to pay a fine of Rs one lakh…,” Special NDPS Judge Narinder Kumar said.

Chand was held guilty for possessing 15.6 kg of opium which is considered a commercial quantity.

According to prosecution, Chand was caught by police in October 2011, near Majnu Ka Tila in north Delhi while carrying drugs.

Police had got a tip-off that a man from Udaipur used to bring opium from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and supply it in Delhi and Jammu.

During the trial, the man claimed he was falsely implicated and alleged that he was picked up by the police from Kashmiri Gate and taken to crime branch office where the case property (opium) was planted on him.
