BHOPAL: Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, making an announcement in the House here on Friday, said experts’ opinion would be sought on sand mining in Narmada river and if they suggest, then sand mining in the river would be stopped. Congress members had raised the issue of sand mining in Narmada after Chouhan’s addressing the House on his Narmada Seva Yatra, scheduled to begin from December 11.

Congress MLA Tarun Bhanot said sand mining should be totally banned to save Narmada. Other Congress MLAs too demanded to take strict action on illegal mining in Narmada.

Chauhan said illegal mining in Narmada would be stopped with iron hand. The judgment given by National Green Tribunal, will also be complied with. He said the decision to stop legal mining in Narmada could not be taken in haste and only experts could take any decision in this regard.

Chouhan said the ruling party and the opposition need to agree on certain issues. Chouhan’s announcement was welcomed by the opposition by thumping of desks. Chouhan also appealed Congress MLAs to join the Yatra. He said the campaign to serve river Narmada should be beyond politics and all lovers of river Narmada and environmentalists are taking part in this drive.
