Bhopal: VC, students ‘oppose’ tourism dept effort to take over Minto Hall

Bhopal: MP Tourism department team had to face tough resistance from ABVP activists when the officials went to take possession of Minto Hall (Old Vidhan Sabha), where currently Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hindi University is running. The members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) protested as the officials asked the authorities to vacate the building when the classes were in progress.

The activists said that since the students were in class it was not right on the part of the officials to make them leave their class as they wanted to take possession of the building. Protesting the move, the activists staged a demonstration, demanding the team to leave the premises. Window glasses were found smashed following the protest. Even MD MP Tourism Chhavi Bharadwaj came to Old Vidhan Sabha to meet University vice chancellor, however the VC Dr Ramdev Bharadwaj refused to see her stating that he would talk to higher ups of MP tourism.

ABVP leader Harsh Chandel said that MP Tourism officials came to the University to acquire it as they want it to convert it into a Heritage hotel. “MD Tourism Chhavi Bharadwaj came to meet vice chancellor but had to leave disappointed as she was told that the university authorities would talk to higher up,” he confirmed.

Vice -Chancellor Dr Ramdev Bharadwaj, while talking to Free Press, said, “Classes of all the undergraduate and post-graduates course of humanities, science, law and others are running in old Vidhan Sabha. We have been allotted Benazir College for conducting classes. If we are given space, we will shift to Benazir College. MP Tourism team arrived to vacate the Minto Hall but at present it is not possible for us to leave it as academic activities are going on and so we refused to vacate it.”
