Bhopal: Social activist Medha Patkar of Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) has threatened to go on indefinite hunger strike against the move of state government which she says will directly affect the displaced persons on the banks of Narmada.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday she said the government had turned a deaf ear to the plight of those living there for years.
She said the police conducted a mock drill to intimidate villagers in Barwani and had threatened them to vacate their houses till July 31.
As per Patkar, the government is trying to make around 18,386 families homeless who were living in 141 villages.
Accusing the government of maintaining false records of displaced families she said the gimmicks of the government would bear no fruit if they neglected grief of the public.
The activists of NBA said the government had failed to take care of those displaced earlier and was now threatening to evacuate 141 villages, which was disheartening. Patkar alleged the government did not have a credible data of the people affected by displacement as it was busy serving corporate houses.
She also alleged the CM never held talks with real activists but gained information about development from his close associates only.
She said the Gujarat government had ensured enough water supplies for corporate giants and only big cities neglecting the plight of draught affected villages which were in need of water.
She also said the 192 villages surveyed in the decade of 80s were facing threat of flood because of casual attitude of governments.
“If the government refuses to budge from its stand then we will go on an indefinite hunger strike from Thursday at the bank of Narmada,” she said.
