Indore : Maha Shivratri was celebrated in the city with enthusiasm and religious fervor, on Tuesday. Thousands of devotees thronged temples to offer special ‘puja’ on the day.
Various religious and spiritual bodies organized functions to celebrate the day. ‘Baraat’ of the Lord was taken out from Shiva temples, located at Marimata and Pardeshipura, in which large number of people including females and children took part.
Elsewhere, shobhayatras were also taken out to celebrate the Lord’s wedding. On the occasion, ‘bhang’ was also distributed.
According to one of the priests of a Shiva temple, it has great significance to worship Lord Shiva on Maha Shivratri.
“Smearing Sindoor and bathing Shivling with milk signifies sanitization of soul, offering fruits represents a long life and fulfillment of desires while lighting of a lamp signifies achievement of knowledge,” the priest said.
Shivdham Gengeshwar Jyotirling temple at Pardeshipura, Gopeshwar Mahadev temple in Gandhi Hall, Jabreshwar Mahadev temple at Rajwada, Indreshwar Mahadev temple at Pandrinath, Gangeshwar Mahadev temple and others witnessed huge crowd of devotees since morning.
Member of Khajrana Ganesh Bhakt Mandal Arvind Bagadi said that 51 quintal ‘khichdi’ was distributed in the temple premise. The distribution was started from Tuesday morning after the special puja offered by the management committee.
Bagadi further said that the prasad distribution went on till late night. A 3-day fair has been started at Devguradia temple. The temple premise has been decked up with colorful lightings and 1000 stalls have been set up for the people reaching there.
Similarly, a ‘maha aarti’ was performed at Bhilatdev temple and Dharawara Dham and special decoration with 251 earthen lamps was done by the members of Yuva Mandal.
