Indore : Mohan Pahwani, a businessman, along with his family has gone green this Ganesh Utsav. He said, “PoP Ganesha idols take several months or sometimes even years to dissolve completely so instead one should use clay statues painted with nature friendly colours to reduce burden on nature.”
The family of four have brought home an eco-friendly Ganesha idol. Anita Pahwani added, “For decoration purpose non biodegradable materials like thermocol and plastic should be avoided and material like paper could be used so that they don’t leave much waste afterwards.”
They believe that one should celebrate and enjoy the festival without causing damage to the environment, as the festival is more about religious sentiment and not showing off.
Prachi Pahwani, a management student, has an effective way of tackling the waste left behind after the 10-day festivities. She suggested, “Flowers, garlands, clothes, plastic and other decoration items should be removed before immersing the idols.
Food items like coconuts and fruits can be distributed among poor while a compost of all the biodegradable items including flowers, paper, etc can be made which in turn can be mixed with the soil to help the plants in your garden.”
