Indore: Nonagenarian gynaecologist Dr Bhakti Yadav was on Thursday presented ‘Padma Shri’ award, conferred on her by Union government, at her residence here by district collector P. Narahari.

Narhari presented the citation and medal of the fourth highest civilian award in the country to 91-year-old Dr Yadav, fondly called as ‘Doctor Didi’ at her residence in Scheme Number 114. State finance minister Jayant Malaiya, mayor Malini Gaud and Jila Panchayat president Kavita Patidar were also present on the occasion.

Dr Yadav could not attend the function held in Delhi on April 13, where President Pranab Mukherjee gave away Padma awards to recipients. Dr Yadav, the first woman doctor from Indore, was conferred the award in recognition of her service to the poor. She has treated over one lakh poor women free of cost during her medical practice, spanning over six decades. She was the only girl in 1948-1953 batch of MBBS course in city’s Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College.
