Indore: Man booked for demanding Rs 20 lakh dowry


Indore: City police Thursday booked a man for allegedly harassing a woman for Rs 20 lakh dowry. The accused took their three children with him and threatened her of dire consequences if she returned home without money. Police are investigating the matter.

According to police, 30-year-old Hina Gauri, a resident of Green Park Colony lodged a complaint with Chandan Nagar police that she got married with Shehzad Gauri of Ratlam in November 2005. After few days of their marriage, Shehzad started torturing her over petty issues.

She stated in her complaint that Shehzad was unemployed for a long time. He started demanding dowry instead of doing any job and later she had to leave her in-laws place. She started living with her parents in Green Park Colony.

Victim told police that Shehzad reached at her house on May 3 last and demanded Rs 20 lakh saying that he want to go foreign for a job. He forcefully took three children with him when the victim expressed her inability to give the money. The accused threatened her with dire consequences if she did not come to in-laws house without money. No arrest has been made till Friday evening and police are investigating the case.

Woman kicked out for dowry

In another incident, Chandan Nagar police have booked another man, his mother and brother for allegedly demanding Rs 5 lakh and a bike as dowry on the complaint of his wife on Thursday.

Police said that 26-year-old Rabina Bi of Chandan Nagar lodged a complaint that she is being harassed by her husband Mohammad Taufiq Sheikh of Ahmadabad his mother Khatun Bi and his brother Ajiz Sheikh for dowry. Everything was okay for a few months but the accused later started demanding dowry. They kicked her out from home when she refused to bring dowry from her parents.
