Two surrender for murder of Muslim atheist in TN

H Farook, a 31-year-old functionary of the rationalist outfit Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, was hacked to death by a four-member gang in Ukkadam, a  Muslim-dominated neighbourhood in Coimbatore in western Tamil Nadu.

Chennai : Three days after a young Muslim rationalist, who had allegedly posted anti-Islam / God messages on his social media accounts, was murdered in Coimbatore, two Muslims surrendered in connection with the crime on Monday.

On Thursday night, H Farook, a 31-year-old functionary of the rationalist outfit Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, was hacked to death by a four-member gang in Ukkadam, a Muslim-dominated neighbourhood in Coimbatore in western Tamil Nadu. The following evening a businessman, Ansath, had surrendered in a local court in connection with the murder.


Deputy Commissioner of Police S Saravanan said investigations revealed that Farook, an atheist had posted strong rational messages on a WhatsApp Group besides on Facebook. This had angered some believers within the Islamic community and led to the murder.

On Monday, two persons Saddam Hussein and Shansudeen had surrendered in the court in connection with the crime. Both were remanded in judicial custody till April 4. Their lawyers, however, claimed that the two were innocent and had surrendered unable to withstand harassment by police.

Several political party leaders including Jawahirullah of the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (as Islamic party) had condemned Farook’s killing saying he was entitled to his rational views.
