Rajput community holds massive protest against ‘Padmavati’

Surat/Gandhinagar/Mumbai: Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus ‘Padmavati’ is becoming another flashpoint in poll-bound Gujarat. The Rajput community, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Bajrang Dal and the Karni Sena held a joint protest against the release of the film in Gandhinagar and Surat on Sunday.

The protestors have alleged that Bhansali has distorted historical facts in the film, thereby making a mockery of the Hindu resistance against Islamic rulers. Over one lakh members of the community converged at Gandhinagar while thousands took part in a protest march in Surat to seek a ban on the release of the movie, which is scheduled to release on December 1. The primary objection of the Gujarat chapter of ‘Karni Sena’ is to a dream sequence in the movie wherein ‘Rani Padmavati’ has been shown romancing with ‘Allaudin Khilji’. ‘‘We condemn such a heinous portrayal our queen. ‘Karni Sena’ will never allow such a movie to hit the theatres,” a spokesperson said.

“The government must ban the release of film. The government has to listen to us, otherwise everyone will have to face the consequences for this. We won’t tolerate disrespect to our community,” a protestor said in Surat. Meanwhile, in Mumbai at least 24 members of the Akhand Rajputana Seva Sangh were detained while protesting outside Bhansali’s residence. They were later released.
