New York: Absconding diamond merchant Nirav Modi seems to love his Indian passport: he reportedly keeps crisscrossing continents on this privileged document, even though it was suspended by the Indian government in February.
Nirav Modi slipped out of India in the first week of January and reportedly went to the UAE. From UAE, he travelled to Hong Kong and London. Currently, he is in New York. None of these countries seem to have any qualms in hosting him despite the passport being suspended. Interestingly, Modi left Hong Kong on February 14. So, he was not there when India requested Hong Kong authorities in March to arrest him and hand him over based on an extradition agreement of 1997.
Even when Nirav and his wife were spotted in Manhattan by a TV channel and reportedly staying in a suite at JW Marriott’s Essex House, Indian authorities did not use their leverage to either question or restrain him. The Central Bureau of Investigation had also approached the Interpol to locate Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi but the global agency seems to be unable to ferret out the fraudster.
