Chennai : In an unusual order the Madras High Court on Thursday restrained the Tamil Nadu Governor and Speaker from conducting a floor test in the Assembly till September 20 after DMK leader M K Stalin’s counsel expressed fears that the AIADMK government might prove its majority after disqualifying 19 dissident MLAs. Thereafter the floor test could be conducted only with the consent of the High Court.

On August 22, as many as 19 AIADMK legislators, who expressed solidarity with side-lined party leader TTV Dhinakaran (Sasikala’s nephew) had met Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao and given individual letters withdrawing their support to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.

Consequently, his government was reduced to a minority in the House, which presently has a strength of 233 (one seat represented by Jayalalithaa is vacant).
