Jammu: In an embarrassment to the PDP-led government in Jammu and Kashmir which was opposing a resolution moved by the opposition National Conference on bringing back power projects from NHPC to state government, it was passed in the Legislative Council today. NC member Qaiser Jamshed Lone moved a resolution in the Council that “this house resolves that all the power projects be returned by NHPC to state government”. Replying to a discussion on the resolution, Minister Abdul Haq Khan on behalf of Power Minister said that it is mentioned in the power budget that the government would actively pursue transfer of power projects from NHPC. The budget also provides for funds for meeting the operation and maintenance cost of such power projects to be transferred from NHPC, Khan said.

Lone took a dig at PDP-BJP government for putting up transfer of power projects from NHPC to state in their agenda. “On one side, they are claiming that they will bring back the power projects from NHPC to state but on the other hand, the central government has replied to a question of PDP MP Tariq Hamid Qarra’s question that these cannot be transferred in view of legal and financial problems”, he said. PDP member Firdous Tak hit back at Lone’s statement saying that it was NC which sold the power projects as well as the interest of people of Jammu and Kashmir to NHPC, triggering verbal duel between NC and PDP members in the House.

On this, member Jehangir Mir who was in the Chair asked the two sides to pacify and take their seats as Minister wants to reply. “It was NC which sold these power projects without even thinking for the interest of people of J&K. Who was in the government for past so many years in the state? Who gave away these projects to NHPC without even entering into MoU?, Khan said.
