First lady Mrs Mukherjee passes away


New Delhi :  Suvra Mukherjee, 75, wife of President Pranab Mukherjee passed away on Monday, according to an official announcement from Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The wheel-chair bound first lady was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Army”s Research and Referral Hospital here two weeks back. She was known to be suffering from a heart ailment. “Suvra Mukherjee died after a cardiac arrest. She was on ventilator till the time of her death,” Army’s Research and Referral Hospital PRO Sanjay Kumar said. A large number of dignitaries paid their last respects to the departed soul at Rashtrapati Bhawan this afternoon.

Her body was at Rashtrapati Bhavan for family and friends to pay last respects from 3 to 5 pm. thereafter taken to 13, Talkatora Road, the residence of her son, Abhijit Mukherjee, MP. The cremation ceremony will be held at the Lodhi Road Crematorium at 10 am tomorrow. She was born on September 17, 1940 in Jessore (now in Bangladesh) and married Pranab Mukherjee on July 13, 1957. A graduate, she was an ardent fan of India’s national poet, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. She was a vocalist of Rabindra Sangeet and performed in the poet’s dance-dramas for long years not only in different parts of India, but also in Europe, Asia and Africa. She founded the ”Geetanjali Troupe”, whose mission is to propagate Tagore’s philosophy as expressed through his songs and dance-dramas. The Mukherjees have three children Abhijit , Indrajit Mukherjee and Ms. Sharmistha.
